A porcelain veneer is a thin layer of porcelain which
is made to cover the front surface of the tooth. Porcelain veneer
can change the appearance of the existing tooth similar to the
manner in which a false fingernail on a nail.
When
Porcelain Veneers may be useful for
your teeth
Porcelain
Veneers can help improve the color and
shape of your teeth
Porcelain veneers
can enhance the color and shape of your
teeth while the ability to improve a
single discolored tooth or lighten the
front teeth is also a possibility.
Porcelain Veneers
can be used to fix chipped teeth
A porcelain veneer
is also ideal for making chipped teeth
appear intact. This is done by covering
the front of the tooth with a thicker
piece of porcelain veneer thus replacing
the chipped area of the tooth.
Porcelain Veneers
can seal small gaps and help align teeth
Porcelain veneers
can also be utilized to seal small gaps
in teeth which cannot be fixed by orthodontic
braces. Furthermore if a tooth is not
in line with the rest of the teeth a
porcelain veneer may be fitted to bring
it back to the correct position.
The
Advantages of using Porcelain Veneers on your teeth
Porcelain Veneers
look as natural as normal healthy teeth
Porcelain veneers have an advantage
over other dental materials in that it is translucent.
Therefore when porcelain veneers are bonded on to teeth
they are able to mirror the light handling ability
of normal healthy teeth, thus allowing the porcelain
veneer covered teeth to appear natural.
Porcelain Veneers are largely
stain resistant
Unlike other dental materials,
porcelain veneers have the added advantage of being
largely resistant to staining from elements which usually
cause stain damage to teeth.
How
are teeth prepared for Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin and generally held in position by a special
bond. Thus preparation required for teeth when fitting porcelain veneers
is considerably limited. Normal procedures include some of the shiny enamel
surface of the tooth being removed using a local anesthetic and an impression
of the teeth being taken and given to the dental technician. The key is
to properly match the porcelain veneer with the rest of the teeth to ensure
the porcelain veneer covered tooth appears natural in comparison to the
other teeth.
